The illustration depicts the scene in Madách Imre's (Emerich Madách's) dramatic poem, "Az ember tragédiája" ("The Tragedy of Man") which treats of the French Revolution, with Danton on the scaffold drawn by Zichy Mihály (Michael Zichy) who was painter in ordinary to the Czar of Russia. He several times visited the British Court too, where he was accorded the friendship of King Edward VII., then Prince of Wales.
